Vitamins Guide : Effects & Sources - Vitamin C
Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid)
Vitamin C is an antioxidant which has been documented to be required in at least 300 different bodily functions. These include tissue growth and repair, adrenal grand function and as well as for healthy gums.
It also aids in the production of anti-stress hormones and also interferon which is an important protein in the formation of the body's immune system, and is also required in a number of metabolic functions.
Not only does it serve as a protection from the harmful environmental pollution as well as prevent cancer, infections and also generally enhancing immunity.
It has even been instances where Vitamin C in large doess was able to render the sting of a Black Widow harmless. ( Although we do not suggest you experiment it out! )
Note that Vitamin C is a water soluble vitamin and thus excess would be excreted from the body within 4 to 24 hours and this would mean that we need a regular intake of it to stay healthy.
Deficiency Intake :
As unlike dogs, the human body can't manufacture Vitamin C and thus we are more prone to diseases and Scurvy is on of the diseases caused by the lack of Vitamin C. This disease causes poor wound healing, bleedy guns and extreme weakness. Sailors in the apst have been known to be infected with this type of disease on long journeys where they lack the intake of fruits and vegetables which are difficult to obtain in the sea.
However, today it is rae, though common signs of a deficiency would include bleeding gums, joint pains, lack of energy, poor digestion and also prolong healing of wounds.
Sources :
Vitamin C can be found in berries, green vegetables, black currants, grapefruit, onions, oranges, papayas, spinach, alfalfa, pepermint, raspberry leaf and so on.
It is however not advicable to consume oranges in large amounts because of their high acid contents.
IMPORTANT NOTES :
When taking aspirn and Vitamin C together and in large doses, it can cause stomach irritation and also leading to ulcers. Even though Viatmin C can help cobat illnesses, it is advices to take them separately.
Also when pregnant, do not consume more than 5,000 mg of this vitamin daily as the infant borned may becomes dependent on this and develop scurvy even when he is exposed to regular doses of Vitamin C.
Chewable forms are also not advised because they candamage the teeth if not careful.
